Smart Thing 1: Ville Leino Insists The Sabres Are Terrible, So In Reality They Are Awesome
Ville Leino finally emerged from the tomb where he and his NHL career were buried this summer to offer his post mortem hot takes on our Buffalo Sabres.
“My Buffalo time was pretty bad overall. I was disappointed for the players and the organization and I think they are going to be like that. It’s hard to play in the NHL if you don’t have a good team.”
OK Ville, let’s go point, counter-point: virtually everything you did here was terrible, considering your six year, $27 million dollar contract. The Sabres needed their players to score goals to avoid “being terrible.” You managed to score ten goals in 137 games here. That’s awful. We’ll all not-so-fondly remember that time you complained that you did not know what your hockey coach wanted you to do on the hockey rink. You were, in effect, a big part of the problem.
After you were removed, you then failed to crack a Bruins roster that is essentially populated by alley thieves. Heck, you couldn’t even beat out Bobby Robins for a job there. Bobby. Robins.
Everything that Leino has done since signing in Buffalo, and after, has been terrible, so it’s safe enough to assume that his assessment of the Sabres is just as bad. In fact, the opposite of what he has done and what he has said seems to historically be the truth.
So thanks, I guess, for confirming that the Sabres are in awesome hands.
Smart Thing 2: Buffalo, You’re Gorgeous Even When Looking Down From The Heavens
Aerial photographers have started to trend here in the Queen City, and for good reason – we’re now getting a look at our landscapes in a way we’ve never seen before. I had a chance to chat with Peter Stergion, who revealed that he safely (and smartly) employs a Phantom quadcopter to generate shots like this:

Smart Thing Three: UB’s Downtown Campus Has Been Visualized, And It Looks Glorious
I’ll just let the video speak for itself here:
The downtown that our children will grow up to know will be nothing like that we’ve, well, had to endure. Next up – a new convention center, new football stadium? Suddenly everything seems plausible.
Smart Thing Honorable Mentions/Tweet Roll:
Here’s a thing that needs to happen.
When Tim Russert died, I thought #Buffalo should name the airport after him. Still do. @BuffaloHistory @Newseum — Alan Bedenko (@buffalopundit) October 16, 2014
The Sabres have launched a clever way to keep us all together as we near the end of the rebuild. As usual with things Sabres-related, this program has “Plenty more comin’ up in a moment!”
Great news, #Sabres fans! We’ve launched a new Fan Loyalty Program, @SabresFanAdv. Earn points, get rewards! Details: http://t.co/VW9x9nzSGO

Remember when I said how nice a new convention center or downtown football stadium would be? Well, forget all that, because:
said this before, but if you get a new downtown stadium and you need that anchor for year round folks to come down..Beer hall of fame. — Joe (@BuffaloWins) October 8, 2014
